Hayllaby’s Diner Delivers Delicious Delicacies Yet Again!

Last Friday, as a reward for earning 100 Team Hays Points, Year 4 enjoyed the best morning in school history! We managed to chow down on a range of foods from a full English breakfast to bacon and sausage sarnies! The incredible kitchen staff helped myself and Mrs Mallaby out tremendously, cooking all the food from fresh and providing excellent service! However, one of the biggest shout outs needs to go to Mrs Pridmore, who created a café vibe in the small hall through her creation of menus, table decorations and the café sign! The whole place looked spectacular and pulled in “world-class” reviews!

The main point that stood out to the members of staff who visited the café and myself, was the conversation and maturity shown by each child. We had children who are normally as quiet as mice serving others and discussing everything from what they were going to eat, to the décor! It really was an eye-opening experience that as a teacher I am desperate to repeat, partly because of the incredible writing that the morning stimulated. The class reviewed their experiences and gave different quotes to their peers, all because they wanted to share their opinions. There was a consistent buzz that transcended the whole of Friday and even into Monday by children who had never “been to a posh restaurant before”. These children loved the fact that Mrs Mallaby and I served them and referred to them as ‘sir’ and ‘madam’! But what really took the biscuit for me, was when it came round to the children serving me. I had children queuing up to call me ‘sir’ and bring me my order (making sure they all served from the right!)

Overall, I would repeat such a simple, yet effective, treat with my class time and time again. For a mere £23.20, every child ordered what they wanted, had a full stomach and had the buzz for wanting to earn more Team Hays Points in order to earn their next reward! If that doesn’t scream positive behaviour, then I honestly don’t know what will!

I can’t wait until the next reward, just to see what else we can create! Mr Hays

Year 6/6A - Visit to St Luke’s Church

On Monday, the Year 6 children spent the afternoon finding Christian signs and symbols at St Luke’s church. They were fortunate to take part in an unblessed communion, have a look around and ask lots of probing questions. The highlight for many children was reading the Book of Baptisms and were overjoyed when they found their own names, or names of loved ones in the book. The children were told about the symbols that represented the body and blood of Jesus and why pictures of lambs were so important.

As always, the children were impeccably behaved throughout the afternoon and did us proud! Well done, Year 6/6A!

F1 - Facing the Elements - Nothing Stops Us!

What a cold a muddy Tree-mendous Tuesday this week! But that didn’t stop us because we like facing the elements and we wrapped up warm in our hats and gloves and off we went. When we arrived on the Yellow Brick Road, after stamping on every mole hill we could find, we stopped and Mrs Fenton positioned us in a line of pairs. We talked about what we had been learning about last week and Avah-Mae reminded everyone that is was The Chinese New Year and our friends remembered that it was the Year of the Rooster. Although we did make rooster biscuits on Friday, by the time they went home some of our friends had a different idea of what they were. ‘A chicken’ said Rylee and ‘a cockroach’ said Dylan! The Year of the Cockroach doesn’t have quite the same ring to it!

Dragons are of course legendary animals, but they are important to Chinese people who think of dragons as helpful, friendly creatures. They are linked to good luck, long life and wisdom. They are nothing like the fierce, fire-breathing Western dragons that carry off princesses and eat people. We had made a dragon’s head in nursery and Mrs Fenton had brought it into the woods with us so we could do the dragon dance like we had seen on YouTube. The children were covered in a parachute so that they looked like the body of the dragon. It was so much fun especially when the parachute was wafted up and down, much to our children’s delight!

After all that fun we went off for a rest, a biscuit and a drink. Thanks to our parents that have donated biscuits for our Tree-mendous Tuesday snack.

We had one last job to do and it involved numbers which we are getting really good at recognising now. We made them with play dough in the week and now we had to make them with sticks! Zuzanna made a number 4 and Poppy a number 5. Then it was back to the unit to get a lovely, warm drink of hot chocolate!

Next week we are going to be making more bird feeders but with a difference! Stay tuned to find out what they look like!

F2 - Chinese New Year Dancing Dragon

Having made our Chinese Dragon last week, we finally put it to the test - as you can see from the pictures of our Dragon Dance our Dragon passed the F2 test with flying colours! We took turns to be the Dragon and do the Dragon Dance - all of us had a turn at playing the musical instruments to accompany the dance. We had so much fun celebrating! We will certainly be ready for next year’s Chinese New Year!

This week we have had a new member of staff join us - Mrs Holmes is a student teacher who will be with us until the end of next half term. So far she has been very impressed with our work and behaviour.

On Tuesday, Eadah and Lucas G shared their Culture Bag with us. The Culture Bags have certainly been encouraging good language and communication skills. Mrs Holmes and Mrs Parker were absolutely bowled over with the quality of language that Lucas was using to describe his passion about dinosaurs. When Mrs Parker suggested he might want to be a naturalist when he grows up his reply was: “Well actually, when I grow up I want to be a palaeontologist!” Wow, Lucas you certainly impressed us all with your knowledge and quality of language!

In maths, we have continued with ‘one more’ and we have introduced number sentences such as, 2+1=3.

In literacy, we have been re-telling traditional stories, making sure that we have included a beginning, middle and end. Our main story this week has been Little Red Riding Hood. Why not ask us to re-tell it at home?

At the creative table we have painted the food we made with the salt dough. They will be on display for the ‘Take One Picture’ exhibition.

In gymnastics, we have been impressing Emma. We have been practising all the moves we have learnt so far. We definitely have some budding gymnasts among us. We are working very hard towards our first badge and certificate. Emma has asked us to practise our front support and back support at home.
