    Amazing Discovery in FSU!

Our FSU children made an exciting discovery when they returned to school: Two sets of foot prints, two nests and two HUGE eggs, had appeared in the unit.  The children have studied the footprints and concluded that the eggs must have been laid by a dinosaur.  Some children put their ear to the egg and could hear a very faint heartbeat. WOW!!! The children are monitoring the egg every day and writing some super sentences about dinosaurs. Watch this space…

  • Looking to the Future

    Wed 19 Feb 2014

Looking to the Future Day  - Year 2

Raising aspirations was the key aim for Year 2’s ‘Looking to the future’ day on Monday. Children were given the opportunity to gain skills and expertise in their chosen future careers. We had a class of various professionals: Mr Fearnely, a painter and  decorator, showed 4 boys how to paint a wall and how to tile; 6 children made afternoon tea for some staff which included a quiche, potato wedges, scones, cupcakes and sandwiches with help from the PTFA; 6 girls had fun with Lucy Mallaby, a performing arts student from Serlby Park; 2 boys delivered important letters and parcels around school under the watchful, skilled eyes of Mrs Watkinson and Mrs Hewlett; Miss Bradford taught 3 girls how to plan, prepare and deliver a lesson to a group of foundation stage children, they even participated in an assembly. Mrs Fearnley shared her skills and techniques in art with Nicole Mills. We also had a visit from Paul, the AA man, where 4 boys explored how to service a car. 2 girls travelled to Greens Stables with Mrs Huthart to give a helping hand with the horses at the stables. Finally, 4 girls had the opportunity to explore a vet’s practice; they even treated their favourite teddies for various illnesses.

Children also received a goody bag which included equipment that they may use when they achieve their ambitions.

Thank you to all professionals involved for giving up their valuable time, it was greatly appreciated and all children enjoyed the experience! Here is just a small sample of what they thought:

    "It was amazing!" - Maya

"I liked Mr Fearnley.  I was very happy. I want to be a builder when I grow up!"

"I loved making the cakes. The best bit was when we got to lick the spoon!"

  • A taste of India

    Wed 19 Feb 2014

    A Taste ofIndia—     Year 3

Year 3 have been using many skills across the curriculum in their topic on India.  They have performed and filmed ‘Jollywood’: Bollywood dancing, in costume.  In science they have made shadow puppets whilst studying light and shadow; they studied the story of Rama and Sita (Diwali) in RE and made some beautiful clay lamps in art; they used their numeracy skills to use nets to make 3D shapes and boxes for their lamps.  In literacy they were able to use their fantastic note-taking when writing up non-fiction and finally, in geography, they located India on the map and compared every day life in India with theirs. We love to explore the world through our learning.

On Wednesday afternoon, Year 3 parents and carers were invited to come and sample a flavour of their children’s work, at the same time being entertained with the shadow puppets and ‘Jollywood’ dancing. They arrived at the departure lounge where they were greeted and given their boarding tickets by our ‘Indian hostesses’ who escorted them to board the Jumbo jet. The pilots, Jonas and Tyler, introduced themselves to the passengers and the air hostesses completed a safety talk. There were 2  in-flight films, Jollywood dancing and a puppet show of Rama and Sita. Parents and carers were able to buy items from the duty-free trolley, poppadum and mango chutney and their child’s Diwali lamps. Of course, everyone was encouraged to join in

  • Mathgical Day!

    Wed 19 Feb 2014

‘Mathgical’ Day                                                                                                                                                                              Langold Langold school spent a ‘Mathgical’ day looking at maths in the real world and how to apply their learning to different tasks.  Year 6 looked at architecture and managed to list 30 jobs that could be created from just one drawing and then they went on to design their own Antarctic Research station for 4 people, finishing with crop circle inspired art.  Year 5 had loads of fun with the Argos catalogue – they had to fit out their café and then design their menu, they also finished with tessellation art –  inspired by the leatherback turtle. Year 4 started by looking at how we have to count syllables in poetry to make it scan and then made their own clocks with string and weights!  Year 3 received a very interesting letter asking for help from a community of gnomes and KS1 and explored lots of different problems that used their fantastic maths skills. FSU had lots of fun using their maths skills.

All in all a very ‘Mathgical’ day!
