KOOL KIDZ - First Edition!
Sun 23 Mar 2014We are very proud to announce the launch of the FIRST edition of:
KOOL KIDZ
Langold Dyscarr Community School’s very own ‘children’s newsletter’,
written for children, by children!
Our 4 amazing Year 6 editors, Holly, Rebecca. Elle and Sarah-Louise started with a blank piece of paper and worked together as a journalistic team to: conduct market research, design the art work and layout of the newsletter, write the articles, find the jokes, set the puzzles, draw the cartoon strip, advertise it in assembly and of course employ the skills of ‘Ask Alex’ to help solve any problems/dilemmas that our children can send in, if they wish. As an added bonus, the team have also been given a budget, which they will have to manage by themselves, to buy prizes for the competitions.
Our editors are aiming to produce at least one newsletter per half term and have invited the rest of the school to contribute. The majority of the work has been achieved during the girls’ free time at lunch times!
We know of no other school children taking on such a task. Yet again, Langold Dyscarr sets the standard and leads the way !
We can’t wait for edition 2!

Children's University Graduation
Mon 17 Mar 2014Langold Dyscarr Community School Graduation March 2014
What a proud evening for all those present at the Langold Dyscarr Community School Children’s University Graduatiion! Graduation! Before the ‘graduates’ were presented with their certificates we were treated to some beautiful singing from the choir, a very athletic display from our gymnasts and a powerful performance from our karate students.
The overwhelming values that our ‘graduates’ have demonstrated have been resilience and determination, values we hold dear in our school!
Our guest speaker, Mr Andy Nicklin, from the Children’s University, was very impressed with our graduation ceremony—Langold Dyscarr leads the way and sets the high standard!
Thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to support and to Emma Spencer, the gymnastics teacher, to Sensei Tony and Sensei Julie from Hidden Dragon Karate and to Marcus for the use of NOW Church. Thanks also to Miss Marsh for organising such a fantastic evening. But our biggest thanks go to the brilliant ’graduates’ - we are so proud of YOU!

Dinosaur Hunting in Dyscarr Wood
Mon 17 Mar 2014Dinosaur Hunting in Dyscarr Woods!
This week the foundation children went on a dinosaur hunt. They put on their backpacks filled with the necessary equipment: magnifying glass, binoculars, and a notepad and pen. We were a bit worried, but Oliver reassured Mrs Fenton and told her not to worry because he would look after her..ok after
When we entered the woods we discovered a huge dinosaur footprint! Miss Frisby checked it with her magnifying glass and it had 3 toes! Next, we found a huge egg nestled in the leaves and branches—we looked for the mummy dinosaur, but we could not find her. We carried on and saw some poo like the one we found in foundation. Finally, we found the dinosaur asleep in the trees! When Lente saw it she said, “I’m going back to school now!” Brooke Leigh made lots of notes about what we saw: she had written ‘river’, dinosaur’ and ‘tree fallen down’. Archie and Tyler were quite worried that Mrs Stacey had been eaten by the dinosaur because she went missing for a while. However, she appeared from out of the wood all safe and sound. What a fantastic adventure we had!

World Book Day March 6th 2014
Mon 17 Mar 2014WORLD BOOK DAY
An Amazing Day of BOOK activities!
Last week we had a super World Book day when we worked on wolf activities all day in KS1 and KS2. At lunchtime, children who had brought a book to swap chose a ‘new’ book from the swap table to take home to read.
‘The Wolves in the Walls’, by Neil Gaiman, provided so much inspiration throughout the school! The activities included: Year 1 making pig puppets, story masks and using brilliant adjectives to describe the wolves; Year 2 went on a ‘wolf’ walk, making a clay wolf head with things collected on the walk; Year 3 used their letter writing skills to inform their grandparents of the wolves in the walls and in the afternoon they also read a story in French about a werewolf and enjoyed acting it out, including howling at the moon; Year 4 made some fantastic wolf masks; Year 5 used co-ordinates to design a game where they could hide and then attempt to find the wolves; Year 6 listened to the story, made notes and then summarised it and used this to develop the concept of ‘fear of the unknown’ and produce some ‘power statements’ and FSU read Little Red Riding Hood. Wow!
