  • Langold Dyscarr 1 - 0 Tuxford Academy

Thu 19 Oct 2017 Mr Hays

Langold Courageously Cling On To Victory Due To Dramatic Defending!

The rain had poured down at Langold, flooding many parts of the playground and field, this filled Mr Hays with dread as the last thing he wanted to do was call off the game! So, a panicked email was sent to Tuxford asking about the quality of their pitch and whether the game would go ahead. The reply was positive and the Langold tribe set sail for the sunnier waters of Tuxford!

The kick-off was due to be at 3:45, but this time soon became 4:10 as both sides waited for the final carload of Langoldians to arrive; the postcode Mr Hays had given proved to have given lots of problems to certain Sat-Navs! Eventually, the players turned up and the match began with Langold shaping up like this:

    Jake

    Chris               Jayden           Taylor

    Joel

         Ziggi       Harrison     Ronnie F

Tuxford proved to be an equally skilled team to Langold, with a resolute defence and plenty of speed on their wings. Within seconds, Mr Hays realised that this game wasn’t going to be the free scoring goal-fest of a few matches ago, it was going to be won in the midfield by hard work. After a few minutes however, it was clear to see that Tuxford wanted to take the game to Langold as they pressed several attacks onto the fledgling defence. However, as has been their custom over the last couple of matches the defence of Jayden, Chris and Taylor proved to be a brick wall in front of Jake, dealing with the danger in a mature, professional manner. Taylor threw himself into tackles repeatedly as Chris and Jayden supported him manfully. The dangerous Langold attack didn’t see much of the ball however, and Mr Hays could see his strike-force becoming more frustrated, leading to them coming deeper to get a touch of the ball. Without realising, Langold spent the next 4 minutes penned into their own half like sheep, with no easy route out.

The wolves were howling at our door, but we still wouldn’t let them in. As a barrage of corners huffed and puffed, Jake was acting like Mr Hays with Halloween trick or treaters; he shut the curtains, locked the door, and gave them no joy!  The collective defence proved to be as stingy as Ebenezer Scrooge in a recession, getting the ball out time and again, before it acted like a boomerang and headed straight back to our net. The home team still smelled blood though and tried to press home an advantage, but with help from the front three and Joel, they were consistently denied.

As the pitch seemed to be tilting in the home team’s favour, Mr Hays brought off Chris for Finn and Ziggi for Ronnie H. The latter substitution made an immediate impact linking up with Harrison through the midfield. Harrison then showed his class by shaping to go to the defender’s left, before laying off an exquisite pass in the opposite direction to Ronnie F who ran clear through on goal and slotted the ball home in the back of the net.

    Langold 1 – 0 Tuxford (Foster 18”)

The goal was completely against the run of play, but the sheer class shown by the midfield and strikers meant that the Langold supporters didn’t feel lucky in the slightest. Only a couple of minutes later, the whistle was blown and half time was upon the boys.

Mr Hays was utterly delighted with the desire and concentration shown by all the players in the first half, but he warned the squad against complacency. Will came on for Joel, Logan for Jake and the boys were ready for round 2!

It seemed as though the pitch may have been tilted in one direction, as the second half saw Langold heap on piles of pressure. Will pressed the defenders, making space for “The Two Ronnies” and Harrison to play in front of them. The woodwork was hit on a number of occasions and Tuxford looked shaky for the first time in the match. However, with such a minute gap in between the two teams it was crucial for Langold to either get another goal, or to shut down the opposition completely.

Ziggi came on for Finn and set about playing in a back 3 with Jayden and Taylor, whilst Joel, Harry and the Ronnies worked in the midfield. What happened next was something that West Ham’s Michael Antonio should be looking very closely at; Langold ran down the clock!

Ronnie F needs to receive the most plaudits for this tactic, on multiple occasions he won the ball in the midfield and took it deep into the Tuxford half, setting up camp on their corner flag. He attracted over 5 of their players before earning repeated corners.

Without much more difficulty, the time ran down and Langold came out of the contest as the victors with a mature performance that everyone was proud of.

    Match Ratings

Jake 8/10 He repeatedly shut the door on the Tuxford attacks, managing to catch, throw and kick the ball as far away from his goal as possible. Easily his best match in a school shirt!
Logan 8/10 Was tested immediately after coming on in the second half by a lofted shot, he caught it easily which set a precident for the rest of the match as he looked as confident as i've seen him in the goal.
Chris 8/10 Was quiet, nervous and unsure about his defending to start off with, but then found a perfect tackle to get his juices flowing. Showed that he is not someone to be messed as he loves a tackle!
Jayden 8/10  A quiet game by his standards, but he always looks so assured at the back. He seems to have as much time as he wants to pick a pass, head a ball or tackle an opponent. Very impressed.
Taylor 9/10 Would have got 10/10 but asked my before leaving if I could tell him what his rating was, so he loses a mark for that. I cannot complain about his performance though, he threw himself around the field and made it very difficult for skilled players to get passed him. Excellent!
Finn 8/10  He had a baptism of fire as he was thrown on as a sub just as the Tuxford attack was gaining momentum. However, he dealt with this pressure very well and played some lovely passes out wide to our speedy wingers.
Joel 8/10  Controlled the midfield with great maturity, he seems to have mastered the quick "nip in" tackle where the attacker believes they have more time than they actually have. This lead to so many counter attacks in the second half in particular.
Ronnie H 10/10 MAN OF THE MATCH To say that he was the youngest on the pitch by a full school year, he showed maturity, poise and talent against a team of boys who were a lot bigger than him. He took shots from outside the box which almost found a way in (if it wasn't for their keeper who was in fine form) as well as showing the composure to bring the game back to his pace. I was very impressed and hope he can build on this for next match!
Ronnie F 10/10 Just misses out on the M.O.M award, but deserves a maximum rating. He covered every blade of grass on the field, drawing the opposition out of position and frustrating their entire team. He has a habbit of travelling great distances without the defender being able to get a clean tackle in on him. His protection of the ball and strength to hold challenges off is remarkable for a year 5!
Ziggi 8/10 Very quiet from Ziggi, he thrives on pitches that he can show off his fancy feet, but so far this year we haven't played on a pitch that has been dry enough for him. However, he has managed to put himself about and helped out the defence when the heat was being piled on!
Harrison 9/10  Another stella performance from Captain Marvel! He dropped into midfield when the pressure was on, but didn't neglect his role as the attacking focal point. The lay-off to Ronnie for the goal was something that I wouldn't be able to produce in my lifetime!
    Will 8/10

An excellent cameo role for Will today, he held up play and pressed Tuxford's backline in order to create more space for his teamates. Was an excellent team player today and gave his all for the team cause!

  • Langold Dyscarr 1 - 2 Ramsden Primary

Thu 28 Sep 2017 Mr Hays

Langold just fall short in front of a bumper crowd!

The second game of the football season was upon the boys from Langold before most of them could blink, and this time it was going to be a challenge as Ramsden were in town. The rivalry between these two sides had built over the last few seasons with Ramsden coming out victorious in one match and the teams enjoying a draw in the other.

Both sides had their full complement of players out as injury problems which had plagued Langold in the past hadn't set in. The boys in blue lined up as follows:

    Jake

    Taylor             Jayden            Chris

    Joel              Ronnie H

    Ronnie F              Harrison (C)                  Ziggi

However, one vital issue had arisen from this home fixture... Mr Hays had to referee! This shook the boys from both sides to the core, as they realised that the red-headed teacher didn't have a clue what he was doing! But as the sides arrived on the field at 3:15 to warm up, they were greeted with a sell-out audience. Mr Tyson had been working hard all afternoon to build the new 3000 seat stand, which was packed full of parents, children, teachers and even a dog! The Langold team were looking resplendent in their brand-new kit (courtesy of the PL Primary Stars initiative) and the atmosphere was electric.

The game began with a huge cheer as Langold kicked off, Harrison passed it to Ronnie H, who was making his debut for the school team, who moved it on forwards down the line to Ziggi. Both sides were playing excellent passing football as the surprisingly lush surface allowed the skilled players to show off their talents. However, the first 12 minutes passed by with hardly any chances occurring on either goal. It was going to be the type of match where one goal would win it. Then, the Ramsden midfield broke into another marauding attack on the Langold defence, but Taylor and Jayden stood strong as they piled into their respective tackles which allowed Joel to set free Harrison who galloped towards the Ramsden defence at pace. The fear in the defender’s eyes was clear to see as Ronnie overlapped Harry on the right, Ziggi overlapped on the left and the recently substituted Will supported the ball in the middle. Langold had turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye and were now bearing down on the Ramsden goal with a 4 on 1. Harry gave the defender "the eyes" which sent him charging off towards Ziggi, whilst the diminutive striker placed a perfectly paced pass into the path of Ronnie, who blasted the ball into the back of the net for his 3rd of the season and Langold's first in the match. The crowd erupted in cheers with premature fireworks and flares being set off in the crowd.

    1 - 0 Langold (Foster 15)

The kick off resumed with Ramsden playing panicky "long-ball" football, which the luminescent Jake mopped up better than Sharon the cleaner does in the school toilets!

Mr Hays blew the half time whistle and both teams jogged back to their respective benches to take on fluids in the roasting heat and discuss their plans for the evening. "I reckon I’ll just go on the Xbox", "I've got to read and do my homework tonight!". This annoyed Mr Hays but not as much as it annoyed new captain Harrison. "THE SCORE IS 0 - 0 you clowns!" There was much confusion circulating around the team as this footballing cliché was lost on them... "err Harry, we're winning 1 - 0... you got an assist!" Harrison almost lost his swede, but luckily Mr Hays intervened, explaining that Harrison meant we shouldn't become complacent. The word complacent then confused the team before they were told to just get back out onto the field and win the second half.

Half Time score: Langold 1 - 0 Ramsden

The whistle blew and Ramsden immediately went on the attack, taking the ball wide and showing their class against the changed defence of Jayden, Harrison, Taylor, and Finn. Throw-in after throw-in occurred as Ramsden inched their way down the field, before disaster struck....

a CROSS (yes it was a cross, he told me afterwards) from the superstar Leyland came in from the right like a meteor. It locked Logan's feet in goal and almost blasted the net apart. An incredible goal from the right wing to draw the game level.

    Langold 1 - 1 Ramsden

The boys in blue saw their heads drop, before Harrison again lifted them. Langold attacked from the restart and an end-to-end match ensued, as both teams worked hard in midfield to gain a footing in the match. Tackle after tackle piled in as the rivalry became even tastier than before. Logan seemed to have made up for the earlier goal as he made 3 incredible saves under a mountain of pressure from the opposition.

As the game seemed set to finish in an entertaining draw another body blow hit Langold hard in the stomach. Another one of the Ramsden superstars broke away from the right-hand side of the pitch and let loose a rocket of a shot that would have carried Logan into the net with it if he had gotten in the way. It had past the defence in seconds and lifted the posts off the ground with its power. Ramsden had scored with 3 minutes left.

    Langold 1 - 2 Ramsden

Characteristically, the Langold heads dropped even lower but the last 3 minutes were going to be full of entertainment. The Langold formation changed to 2 at the back as strikers were poured up front. A free kick from Harrison ricocheted around the box with blue socks swiping like a round on Total Wipeout to try and get a boot on the ball, before the defenders cleared it out for a corner. There were 30 seconds left on the clock. Langold had a corner. Everybody piled forward. All it needed was a tasty ball into the box. The crowd held its collective breath. Even the dog covered its eyes. In came the ball....

    .....

    ......

    .....

    .... it didn't go in.

Mr Hays blew the whistle and the teams shook hands. It had been an extremely skilful match from both sides and thoroughly enjoyable for the bumper crowd. The pundits from Sky Sports were already talking about the return fixture and who would be victorious. But congratulations to Ramsden must be given.

    Match Ratings:

Jake 8/10 Concentrated well in goal and managed to collect the long balls over the top of our defence. Didn't have much more to do thanks to the excellent defence in front. But what little he had to do, he did it well.
Logan 9/10 May have let 2 goals in, but it could have easily been 5 - 1 to Ramsden. Saved a lofted shot by tipping it onto the crossbar then catching the rebound. Saved another by smashing his head against the post, and saved a third by diving low to his right to a hard shot. Played excellently and was the most confident I have seen him in goal.
Taylor 9/10 Was as solid as a rock. He headed the ball with no fear of losing his brain cells, piled into tackles and came out of every one of them victorious. He made the Ramsden attack change their plans so that they didn't have to go near Taylor. Fantastic!
Jayden 9/10 Marshalled the defence with control and his decision making was as on point as a sharpened pencil. He gave the midfield so much confidence by always being there to stop the opposition's attack. A mature and controlled performance.
Chris 9/10 Another feather in the cap for him in his second match. He was outnumbered for the majority of the game, as their attackers tred to stay away from the duo of Taylor and Jayden. But Chris steered the ball into the corners and put it out of play if he had to. Very impressive!
Finn 9/10 Was brave when required and showed off his unusual technique of allowing the ball to hit him in the stomach repeatedly. It raised quite of few eyebrows to see Finn rising like a salmon then then fall to floor clutching his waist. Probably needs to use his feet more next time!
Joel 7/10 A quiet game for Joel because he was "tired". He got involved in the midfield but was found guilty of over playing the ball and trying to beat 3 or 4 defenders instead of passing out wide. He will come good this season and win the team a match as he normally does.
Ronnie H 7/10 A promising debut against a very tough team. He looked at first like a rabbit in the headlights before he realised that he was more than good enough to play at this level. It is going to be fun watching him develop and control matches this season.
Will 7/10 A quiet game for Will today, he made a couple of good flick on headers, but was used more in a containing midfield role because of the Ramsden firepower. Loses marks for asking if he was playing the next match during the actual match!!!
Ronnie F 9/10 Busy, gritty and brave in this game today. He loved the challenge, competiton and tackles in this game especially. He reminds me of Roy Keane or Patrick Viera, with his tenacity. Very impressive performance.
Ziggi 7/10 Quiet from Ziggi because he had a private duel with their star player on the wing. It was even all the way through the match which shows how well he did. However, he loses marks for complaining that his knee was falling off after his old scab was removed in a tackle.
Harrison 9/10 The captaincy really has sat well on his shoulders, he is steadily becoming a consistent and respected leader in the team. Which bodes well for the upcoming season!
Logan's Dad 10/10 MOM Man of the Match performance from Logan's dad as he managed the team bench whilst Mr Hays pranced around the field. He made substitutions when he had to and saved Mr Hays from having to multi-task which everyone knows he cannot do!
Mr Hays 4/10 Didn't have a watch on so had to use the timer on his phone. Ended up calling China 4 times in his pocket because of this. Also was reluctant to blow his whistle more than 4 times in the match and wore bright pink socks.

  • Langold Dyscarr 9 - 0 Misterton Primary

Thu 21 Sep 2017 Mr Hays

"Romelu Boardman strikes home, but Lyndsay takes the match ball"

The first match of the season was upon the boys from Langold in no time at all, and with only one proper practice session under their belts, Mr Hays was worrying that the team would be as under-cooked as Crystal Palace!

With rain drops the size of golf balls hitting the Langold playground, the team set off in convoy for the 32-mile round trip to Misterton Primary. It was a highly uneventful journey in Mr Hays' car for once, with Joel, Jake and Jayden providing nothing but a constant stream of drivel to the annoyance of their teacher.

Finally, through the monsoon conditions, the team pulled up to the impressive two-storey school with their own Swimming pool (as the boys in the back noticed immediately!). The walk to the field was a rather pleasant one, as the rain was nothing but a gentle mist. However, as the team gathered for their warm-up, a cloud that would not have looked out of place in the film "Armageddon" rolled over the school, bringing with it enough rain to fill the swimming pool, that Joel was so impressed with, five-times over!

The match details were agreed as an 8-a-side match with 2x20 minute halves, and the team lined up as:

    Logan O

    Taylor Jayden Chris P

    Joel

    Ziggi Harrison Will

Regular readers of these match reports will notice that Will has moved from his former position as goalkeeper to what appeared to be a striker! In an interview filmed preseason he explained his reasoning:

"I just got bored with being in the net, it was cold and they booted a ball at me really hard. I'd rather score goals if I’m honest!"

Mr Hays thought that the new striker could be used as an impact target man, of the same ilk as Andy Carroll at West Ham, Chris Wood at Burnley or the brilliant Mamadou Thiam at the mighty Barnsley FC!

However, even the best plans go wrong as Ronnie forgot that he still had his school shoes on and was unable to start the game due to an undoable knot in his football boots.

Nevertheless, the game began with Langold on the attack, with Harrison and Ziggi immediately linking up well, resulting in Harry's shot just going wide. Warning shots had been fired by the boys in white, which were soon followed with devastatingly accurate passing moves, culminating in Harry's first goal of the season.

    1 - 0 Langold (Lyndsay 2)

Straight from the kick-off though, the home side responded with an attack of their own, which was expertly dealt with by the back three of Jayden, Taylor, and Chris. They broke up the attack and set free the pacey Ziggi to deliver a good pull back to Will at the edge of the box. Misterton were scrambling at this point and had to result to a last-ditch tackle on Harrison to prevent the diminutive striker from pulling the trigger. The tackle however, was judged by the referee to be from behind and a free-kick was awarded at a tantalising distance from the opposition goal. Harrison stepped up and bent a gorgeous shot over the wall and into the top corner of the net.

    2 - 0 Langold (Lyndsay 2,4)

The away side were now on top in the contest and were instructed to put the game out of reach within the next 5 minutes. The boys responded excellently, as Joel fed Will, who switched the play to Harrison, who transferred possession to Ziggi, who crossed for Harry to score his hattrick goal.

    3 - 0 Langold (Lyndsay 2,4,8)

Mr Hays then made a few vital substitutions as he brought off Harrison and Will, replacing them with Ronnie and Finn.

The subs made an immediate impact, as Joel pulled the strings again, feeding Ronnie with a through ball to put him in a one-on-one situation. Ronnie pulled the trigger and buried the ball into the side netting, which burst through and finished behind the goal. However, in the typhoon-type conditions, the referee thought that the ball missed the net and awarded a goal kick.

It wouldn't be long though before Ronnie smashed home the ball again, this time making sure it travelled straight into the centre of the net.

    4 - 0 Langold (Lyndsay 2,4,8, Foster 14)

The team were now firmly on top, as the home side played out to the end of the half.

    Half time score - Langold 4 - 0 Misterton

Mr Hays then switched Logan with Jake, Chris with Finn, and Harrison with Joel to have a look at the players on debut in other areas of the pitch.

The conditions were now torrential as the boys kicked off the second half. The wide play was again fantastic as Ziggi, Ronnie, Harrison and Chris linked together to provide sharp attacks, forcing the opposition keeper to make several good saves.

However, the 5th goal was always coming and it was Ronnie who bagged it, sliding the ball through the keeper and into the back of the net.

    5 - 0 Langold (Lyndsay 2,4,8, Foster 14, 24)

Will entered the fray now, replacing Ziggi in the centre of attack and he provided an excellent vocal point for the wingers to cross to.

He linked up well with Harrison, as the new school captain showed his class again. First, he split the defence, before rounding the keeper and slotting home for his 4th of the game.

    6 - 0 Langold (Lyndsay 2,4,8, 25, Foster 14, 24)

Whilst these goals were being riffled in, 4 attempts from Boardman were all either saved or missed and the crowd gasped in agony as it just didn't look like it was going to be his day. Until.... a through ball from Harry left Will in the clear. He looked up, stumbled a little, but then met the ball with the point of his boot to see it fly past the keeper and into the net for his first ever goal in Langold colours.

    7 - 0 Langold (Lyndsay 2,4,8 25, Foster 14, 24, Boardman 28)

Whilst the goals seemed to be flying in, the Langold defence remained focused and shut down any sniff of an attack from the opposition before it got going. Credit must go to Taylor, Finn, Jayden, Ziggi and Chris who all stood tall and denied any threat from Misterton.

With the match losing intensity rapidly as the weather took over even more, the away side were awarded a free-kick just inside the opponents' half. The instruction to Joel was to put the ball in the box and hope we get a rebound. However, the midfield maestro had other ideas. He launched the ball over all the players and through the goalkeeper before he had time to move. A wonderful goal from an insane distance added Joel's name to the scoresheet.

    8 - 0 Langold (Lyndsay 2,4,8, Foster 14, 24, Boardman 28, Constantine 32)

But he wasn't finished there, Joel received an excellent pass from Finn, which cut through the Misterton defence to leave him with a tight angle to finish. But finish he did, as he blasted home to force the referee to end the game early at the score of 9 - 0.

    9 - 0 Langold (Lyndsay 2,4,8, Foster 14, 24, Boardman 28, Constantine 32, 34)

Overall, in terrible conditions the boys came out with an emphatic win over a tough Misterton side. The focus will now be on Ramsden in our next match as we try to banish the demons of the last season by maintaining our good form.

    Match Ratings

Logan O 7/10 Had very little to do, but earned his 5th clean-sheet in Langold colours. Loses several marks for asking Mr Hays if he can go upfront every 3 seconds.
Jake 7/10 Similar to Logan, but he made sure he had a clean sheet at the end of the game to open his account for the school. Impressed me with his kicking from hands ability.
Jayden 7/10 Bossed the defence and instructed the defenders on either side of him extremely well. Looked as solid as a rock under pressure.
Taylor 8/10 An eye-opening debut. Showed me exactly what he can do in defence and is in the process of building a reputation for hard tackles!
Chris 8/10 Another solid debut, was asked to play in foreign positions but did them with gusto. Loved a tackle and read the game well.
Joel 8/10 A performance that was expected from Joel, now a senior player in the team. He looked composed on the ball and gave us an extra option going forward. Loses a mark for getting overly excited by a swimming pool.
Finn 8/10 Another debutant, but slotted into the team make-up with ease. Started in the midfield originally, but showed his class in defence where I think he will stay for the remainder of the season.
Will 8/10 For his first game out of the net, he worked hard and had plenty of opportunities to score his first goal before doing so with applom.
Ronnie 8/10 Hard working, industrious and with a lethal finish. Ronnie has taken his game from strength to strength over the summer holidays and we reaped the rewards in this match.
Ziggi 7/10 A quiet game for Ziggi in regards to the score sheet, but to play at that level whilst carrying an injury was very impressive. Probably deserved a goal with the quality of crosses that he delivered. Loses a mark for moaning about being in defence.
    Harrison

    10/10

    M.O.M

Awarded the captaincy of the school team and lead by example all day. Brought others into the play with his passing before showing how deadly he can be with his finishing. An excellent performance.
