FS1 Autumn 1 Overview - Once Upon An Adventure...

Nursery Rhyme Sing Along!

Please share these rhymes at home in preparation for our Nursery Rhyme Sing Along Performance. We can’t wait for you to come and sing with us!

Nursery Rhyme Sing Along

We aim to promote children’s early communication, language development and confidence through a strong focus on nursery rhymes during Autumn 1. By introducing one key rhyme each week, alongside a wider range of familiar rhymes, we support children to develop listening skills, rhythm, memory, and vocabulary. We also aim to strengthen home learning links by encouraging families to engage with shared rhymes at home, supporting consistency and enjoyment in children’s learning experiences.

Nursery rhymes are taught daily through whole-class sessions, small group singing, and continuous provision opportunities. Each week, children learn a focused rhyme, supported through repetition, story props, musical instruments, and Makaton signing to ensure learning is inclusive and accessible for all children. Families are provided with a set of 10 rhymes to practise at home, including rhymes from Little Wandle and additional rhymes chosen to reflect children’s interests. At the end of Autumn 1, we host a Nursery Rhyme Sing Along event where children sing with their families using lyrics displayed on screen, followed by rhyme-themed activities, resources, and shared snack time to further embed learning in a meaningful and enjoyable way.

As a result, children develop increased confidence in joining in with familiar songs and rhymes, demonstrating improved listening and attention skills, enhanced vocabulary, and stronger speech rhythm and pronunciation. Children are able to recall and independently access rhymes within their play, using props and actions to support storytelling and communication. Families report greater engagement with learning at home, strengthening the partnership between nursery and home. The event provides a positive shared experience that supports children’s personal, social and emotional development and helps children feel proud of their achievements, celebrated through a certificate recognising their participation.
